Funeral: Saturday January 28, 2017 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of James David Shives, a truly genuine man who was kind-hearted and loved people without distinction.  He died peacefully on Monday, January 23, 2017, at home surrounded by his family.  He was a beloved husband, cherished father, loving brother, and selfless grandfather.  He had a magnetic, jovial personality, and displayed a wonderful sense of humor; he was always the life of the party. With his inner circle, he was caring and had a calming presence, born of his contemplative nature.  He was our north and our rock, and he will be profoundly missed.

Born Monday, September 7, 1942 in Fort Monmuth, NJ, he was the son of the late Leo Sigel Shives and the late Naomi Ruth (Ross) Shives.

Jim graduated from Hancock High School in 1960 where he was a member of their First Football Team; he went on to receive his Bachelor of Science and MBA, both from Shepherd University.  He was employed as the Assistant Administrator with the Western Maryland Hospital, where he advocated for patients and their staff, retiring after more than 35 years of service.  Additionally, Jim served on the Planning and Zoning Commission for the City of Hagerstown, MD for several years.  He was an active member of the Hagerstown YMCA and, in his earlier years, enjoyed coaching and being a referee for numerous youth sports. He was also an avid fisherman who did not mind sitting in the cold for hours waiting for the trout to bite, while pondering the mysteries of life.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley; three daughters, Lucy and husband Shane, Teresa and husband Brian, Ana and husband Victor; sister, Sandra and husband Jim; grandchildren, Briana, Everest, Cristina, Javier, Joaquin, Joseph and Naomi; niece, Terry, and great nephew, Spencer.

A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Saturday, January 28, 2017 at 10:00 AM at St. Mary Catholic Church, 224 West Washington Street, Hagerstown, MD, with the Rev. Lawrence Adamczyk as celebrant.

Family will receive friends at the Douglas A. Fiery Funeral Home, 1331 Eastern Blvd North, Hagerstown, MD on Friday January 27, 2017 from 6pm-8pm.  The Rosary and other prayers will be offered at 5:30pm prior to the visitation.

Interment will be at the Rehobeth Church Cemetery, Big Cove Tannery, PA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the St. Mary Catholic Church’s Knights of the Holy Tabernacle, or to Hospice of Washington County Doey’s House.
